How to Unlock More Visualizations with the IDEA ODBC Driver
The effectiveness of an audit lies in the results you communicate with your stakeholders. As the adage says, “a picture is worth a thousand words” – visually displaying data is much more engaging for your audience when the facts are in plain sight. The story you tell with the organization’s data becomes much more potent with dynamic, visual results. This gives you more leverage as an auditor as others can rely on the insights.
Not only does it bolster your report, but it also helps your team work better together. When your audience, including both stakeholders and auditees, is intrigued and interested in your data visualization, it unlocks the ability to find anomalies as a team. A dynamic, interactive visualization gets everyone on the same page encouraging collaborative processes. This enables your organization to make smarter decisions backed by data and the result: you strengthen the impact of your audit department.
Tapping into all the tools available is crucial for the success of your reporting. Especially in today’s data-driven world, it’s essential to utilize all the tools out there. As you have more options to communicate your results visually, your reports become stronger.
That’s why we’ve included an ODBC driver in IDEA 10.4 that connects IDEA data to third-party applications that are ODBC-enabled. This driver allows you to connect to robust data visualization tools including Power BI, Tableau, MS Excel and more. Delivering more options for visualization gives you an enhanced ability to further analyze, interpret and reveal more insights.
Using the CaseWare IDEA ODBC Driver
Note: This integration works with any OBDC-enabled application; however, for this blog, we will be looking at the Power BI application.
How to take advantage of this integration?
First, we have to create a User or System DSN that can be used to connect the IDEA data source to a third-party application. To create a User or System DSN and configure the CaseWare IDEA ODBC Driver:
- In Windows, search for the appropriate ODBC Data Sources application.
- Select either User DSN or System DSN and click Add.
- Select CaseWare IDEA Driver and click Finish.
- In the CaseWare IDEA ODBC Driver Setup dialog box, name the data source and select the location of the data source.
- After opening PowerBI, select Get Data.
- Within the Get Data menu, select More… then choose Other.
- Select the IDEA Data Source files to add them to Power BI.
It’s never been easier to bring IDEA into third-party visualization tools. Leveraging more data visualization tools allows you to extract more value from your organization’s most valuable asset: the company’s data.
